Smolt Mortality Project

The TDSFB would like to run a project in the Tummel-Garry Hydro System which would demonstrate the mortality of smolts running the gauntlet of the hydro dams and turbines in the system. The project will use the latest technology sensors with the results being added to those of previous studies and used to convince the various Government and Indutrial stakeholders that we must mitigate for undoubted losses due to the hydro system. Such mitigation must be practical eg stocking or trapping and trucking smolts below the dam or financial. Funding is critical.

We believe that a satisfactory conclusion to this project will bring significant benefits to the River Tummel salmon stocks and and also those of the middle amd lower river.

The Board has no funding available and the Tay Catchment Salmon Alliance has accepted the challenge to raise the £100,000 necessary to deliver the project next year. We are looking at ways to reduce the costs but are running with £100,000 as the goal.
